things that I should feel lucky I can complain about

September 10, 2026 by suzanne day by day

Fumes

In the car this morning, I kept trying to think of things that would fit in a “running on” category: fumes, empty, Dunkin’, sentences… although the last one is really “run on” while the first two seem pretty specifically “running on.” I’m not super clear on the semantics of the Dunkin’ jingle. Anyway, I may have a bit of a Connections addiction. Oooh! Adrenaline!

Running on fumes is stuck in my brain because that’s all I’ve got in the tank at the moment. To switch metaphors: my social battery is drained. And I cannot see when I’ll have time to recharge it.

I feel like I JUST WROTE ABOUT THIS, “this” being my currently intense feeling of over-scheduled overwhelm. You’ve heard it already. You’ve likely LIVED IT already. It’s nothing new, we’re all dealing with All The Things, and yet, this is what’s on my mind so I’m going to vent about it.

And yes, I DO feel like a cliche, and I do feel mildly ridiculous because I only have the one child and the one husband and the zero full-time jobs, and I also still feel like I need a solid stretch of people-free time or I am going to lose my mind.

This morning I cancelled a get-together with a close friend because I just couldn’t. And I’m feeling guilty, even though she was not only completely understanding, but also praised me for being honest about what I needed (she is a really good friend), because I feel Time With Friends should be a top priority, and apparently it isn’t.

Or maybe it is a top priority, it’s just… trumped by other priorities? I don’t know. Priorities kind of suck, because by their very nature you are putting some things ahead of other things and the things that are lower on the list are bound to get their feelings hurt.

You know what? I think part of my issue is that one of things that has moved above “Time With Friends” on the list is something that I don’t even enjoy. And yet, it’s inextricable from one of my very uppermost priorities, which is My Kid.

My kid, as you know from all my whining of late, is in a fall sport. It is important to me that I attend her games.

Here I feel compelled to make a little pit stop in Toleranceville, whose town motto is Just Because It’s Important to Me Doesn’t Mean It Needs to Be Important to You.

It is important to me to attend Carla’s games. It is also important to me, for Reasons, that we attend the games of her teammates. (Long, complicated, and boring story short: There are three separate teams, which means that, on any given day, there could be three separate games.)

These things are important to me, and therefore we are making them work. But it sucks. It sucks because sometimes Carla and I are stuck at a middle school sporting venue for up to three hours at a time. It sucks because Carla – as I previously mentioned – has a shitload of homework this year. It sucks because my butt and back hate the bleachers, and I keep forgetting to bring my cushy stadium seat with me from the car.

It also sucks because I am sometimes socializing with other parents for two to three hours at a time. The other parents are lovely, and we cheer each other’s kids on, and chat about schoolwork and friendship drama and hair products.

But this is too much socializing. I am not cut out for this volume of socializing!

My preferred level of socializing: One to two hours a week of chit-chat with a friend in person, maybe another thirty to sixty minutes of chatting via phone with another friend. In the course of an ideal week, I might also enjoy spending time with my parents for an hour or two. Maybe I could swing two social events in one week, if they were separated by a buffer of several days.

That’s a total of about five hours of social interaction (not counting time with my husband and daughter).

Let’s look at the reality, starting a week ago today:

  • One hour and forty-five minutes of school meetings
  • Four hours of hosting an impromptu pool party featuring five children and one adult
  • Five hours of sports events
  • Six and a half hours of one-on-one conversation
  • Seven hours of social commitments

That’s more than an entire day’s worth of interacting with other people.

I realize that for a lot of people, twenty-four hours of interpersonal communication doesn’t sound like a lot. If you work full time outside the home, for instance, spending forty hours a week with other people is standard. (I honestly cannot fathom how I ever worked in an office.) But in my case, this past week, I’ve experienced nearly 500% more social time than my ideal. And I’m looking down the barrel of three more hours of sports-mom social time this afternoon.

I would like to hole up in a dark, silent room with my cat and a pile of books until January, please and thank you.

Since that’s not feasible, I have been looking at the calendar with an eye to trimming things back. But this is where things get messy. While the prevailing advice seems to be along the lines of “put on your own oxygen mask first” and “don’t be afraid to say no” and “treat self-care as non-negotiable,” it’s not quite as easy to implement as it sounds.

In the next two weeks alone, we have a fancy event, to which we RSVPed a long time ago; please trust me when I say that we cannot back out without serious consequences. We have family commitments – including house guests staying for a few days – and a birthday celebration that feel important to stick with. I have a physical therapy follow-up and a hair appointment and an appointment with the sleep specialist – all of which are varying levels of Necessary, and all of which take a lot of social energy. Carla, of course, has ongoing sporting events and an upcoming musical performance. There are various school events that I need to attend, and please believe me that I am shirking PLENTY of them and only planning to attend the really necessary ones. When I look at this normal if lengthy list of upcoming events, all I can see are the hours and hours and hours of energy I will need to summon for listening and responding and acting like a reasonable human.

There are a bunch of things that need to be on the calendar that aren’t yet, because I am dreading adding MORE to the schedule: a meeting to discuss the end-of-lease procedure for my car, an appointment with someone about a potential allergy, a follow-up appointment with a doctor, a meeting with our contractor about our roof replacement, a phone call with the garage door installer, a conversation about next steps to address the fucking pool leak. There are relationship maintenance things that keep getting relegated to “later,” like a catch-up phone call with my childhood best friend, a dinner with friends we need to reciprocate, the long-discussed-but-never-materialized-drinks with neighbors. And literally ALL of my creative pursuits have been suspended for now – unless you count the latest drivel I’ve posted, which, well, it’s something, I guess.

I feel like some things are easier to cancel or reschedule than others. I feel like some people are more understanding than others. And yet it feels bad and wrong and taking-advantage-of to, essentially, de-prioritize those events and people simply because it’s easier to do so.

The friend I bailed on this morning: I knew she would understand. But I cherish our friendship and I want to prioritize our time together. Plus, even the most understanding friend is bound to feel hurt and inferior and unwanted if she keeps getting cut. However… if I’m completely depleted from all these other commitments, I can’t give 100% to her anyway, which isn’t fair. Is it better to postpone our time together until I can focus on her? Shouldn’t I be trying to edit out the things that are less crucial over the longterm – like sitting in the bleachers for three hours a night??? Except that feels important for reasons that I cannot fully articulate, reasons related to sportsmanship and being a team player and supporting others and showing my kid that sometimes you do the thing you feel is right even if it’s not the easy thing. Reasons that other parents have clearly deemed less important to them than things like eating dinner together or focusing on homework first or getting to bed at a reasonable time. And, to be clear, I get why other parents are emphasizing the things they are! Those things are also important! Don’t make me take us back to Toleranceville!

My writing – I feel especially guilty about putting that on the backburner. I am well aware of the advice to treat your creative work like a job and no matter what, get your butt in the chair and be consistent, and I am doing none of those things. Does that mean it’s really not as important to me as I’d like to think it is? Does that mean I’m prioritizing the wrong things? Or does it mean that I’m an inveterate people pleaser, and sacrificing the things that affect only me instead of the things that affect other people feels more doable than trying to put myself first?

I’m not expecting you to resolve this for me. (The obvious answer is Don’t go to three hours of sports, but that is not the route I am choosing, even if you think I am being insane.) I’m not expecting me to resolve it for me. I think I just have to power through until the end of the sports season, and hope that whatever comes next is less socially demanding.  Maybe I need to buy myself this, as a heads up for anyone I encounter.

Sunday Randomosity: Deep in the Mayhem and It’s Not Yet May

I have tried to write myself into this post several times from several directions, and I’m not getting anywhere. So I’m just jumping right into bullet points. Fair warning: I think I have achieved a new level of unhinged disconnected randomness today. Welcome to my brain.

  • The week ahead marks the end of April and the beginning of May. That is bonkers. The end-of-year mayhem is well underway and I still haven’t figured out Carla’s summer camp situation. The only thing that is giving me solace about that is that many of her friends’ parents are still trying to figure out summer camp, too. You know what else I haven’t figured out at all? Carla’s birthday situation. Zero progress since I last fretted about both summer camp and her birthday at the end of March. ZERO. Same story with our summer travel plans. My husband has checked out some books from the library about our destinations, but that’s as far as we’ve gotten. I NEED SOMEONE TO MAKE SOME DECISIONS AROUND HERE AND I NEED IT TO NOT BE ME.
  • Do you ever dream about other bloggers? I have had dreams recently about TWO of my favorite bloggers, and I wonder WHAT they are trying to tell me. The dreams, not the bloggers. Presumably the bloggers are not trying to speak to me through dreams. (Okay, I am interrupting this bullet point because I am having the strongest sense of déjà vu, as though I have written this exact thing before. Have I? If so, I’m sorry! I feel unable to come up with blog topics lately, but if I’m so uninspired I’m repeating myself verbatim, well, that’s a new low.) In my most recent dream, the blogger was MISSING, and that was quite upsetting. Like, she’d just disappeared from her home and no one was able to contact her. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
  • I have a Big Cleaning and Organization Project ahead of me. As usual, I have handled my feelings of dread about this project by pretending that buying the exact right combination of organizational tools and items will effect an immediate and permanent personality and behavior change. Like if maybe adding a second and third laundry bin will prevent laundry from ending up on the floor. Lack of accessible bins is definitely the problem. The rational part of my brain understands that I am being ridiculous. But there is also a little hopeful part that thinks, maybe having additional homes for very specific things WILL help.
  • Our house suffered some storm damage recently. Nothing emergent, although it does seem like we will need a new roof and siding good times woo hoo yay. After the storm, our neighborhood was immediately suffused with people from contracting companies trying to get our business. One afternoon the doorbell rang so frequently I was sure there was a LINE outside my house, with contractors taking turns handing out their business cards like bizarre-o trick-or-treaters. My husband got a referral for a contractor that a colleague had used previously, and I called him, and he came over right away and walked me through the damage and the process of working with the insurance company to start the repair/replacement process. But then, after talking with my husband and parents and some friends whose home were similarly affected, I reached out to another contractor to come give his assessment. Both contractors were very nice and knowledgeable and patient. Both have local companies. Both came with recommendations. But the second guy has so much more experience. Like… decades, while the first guy has only been in this business for two years. My husband and I are leaning toward the second guy, but I feel TERRIBLE. I mean, I was the one who reached out to the first guy! He was so helpful! And now I have to tell him we’re going with someone else? Maybe the first guy would be the better option – presumably he’s new and hungry and eager to prove himself and develop a customer base. But the second guy is well established and has the capacity and the experience to handle our project. ARGH.
  • Have you seen This Is a Gardening Show? My family started watching it after we could not decide on a family movie, and it is DARLING. I admit that I am not the biggest Zach Galifianakis fan; his humor is hit or miss with me. But this show has bite-size episodes about some sliver of agrarian life, and I love it. I have already learned so much! Like, you can’t grow apples from seeds! And you should never water tomatoes from the top! Also, there is this kid in one of the episodes who is either highly imaginative or an expert at messing with people. I want him to have his own series.
  • The other show I am watching lately could not be more different from TIAGS, in tone or content. It’s Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen and it’s gory and horrifying and I love it. I do have to follow each episode with a palate cleanser, though. Usually an episode of Rooster if it’s not too late, or something benign and soothing like House Hunters. Sitting in smug judgment of strangers who are willing to obliterate their housing budgets for things I deem pointless never gets old.
  • What do you do with hair sloughage in the shower? Yes, this is a revolting topic but I feel like it’s one we all deal with so I’m Going There. Some people rinse any stray hairs off of their fingers onto the floor while they shower, then, after drying, collect the whole disgusting clump with a tissue which they throw in the trash. Some people choose instead to drape strands of hair onto the wall of the shower, where they adhere, sometimes forever. Either option makes me strongly consider pursuing a life of baldness. I am considering making this purchase for the members of my family who fall into the wall décor camp. (I am not buying a tub shroom; I can hardly even think about a tub shroom without gagging.)

  • MOVING ON TO A FAR LESS REPULSIVE (BUT FAR HAIRIER) TOPIC: The cat continues to be magnificent. He is in a phase of being completely inscrutable. He is usually the strong but silent type, so when he meows, I react immediately. But… I don’t know what he wants. He has been extra playful lately, so I got him some new toys for his beloved fishing pole. He seems to like the dragonflies just fine, but he adores the grasshopper. Or wants very much to eat it, sometimes the difference is difficult to discern. He has also been sitting in new places. Like, instead of sitting solely in his window perch, he has been lounging on my office chair more and more lately. Does that… mean something? And he’s been sleeping with me very inconsistently. Some nights, he’s snuggled up against my legs like normal, and other nights he never visits at all. What does that MEAN? What are you trying to TELL ME?
  • It feels like 98% of this post is a rehash of things I have already talked about before. So why not discuss my forearm? Looks like I first mentioned it here on the ol’ blog back in mid-March, by which point it had been bothering me for a few months. It continues to bother me. It hurts when I do the dumbest things. The other day I was grinding pepper with a pepper grinder, which sent pain shooting down my wrist into my elbow. The affected arm wasn’t even the one that was twisting the pepper grinder! It was the stabilizing arm! Lifting a bowl out of a cupboard is a no-go. Holding grocery bags is a joke. I have fully given up on weight training which makes me feel like my muscles are getting soggy. I finally went to the doctor who diagnosed tennis elbow (I have never once played tennis) and is throwing all the things at it since it’s been bugging me for so long: steroid, NSAID topical gel, physical therapy. I even got a nice shiny referral to ortho if the other methods don’t work. My dad noted that tennis elbow is similar to plantar fasciitis, in that the only really treatment is time. BLARGH. I do not want to hear that. I want to treat it and have it GO AWAY.

  • I have been a terrible non-participant in Elisabeth’s latest round of the CBWC. Our weather has been so up and down – one day, it’s 78F/25.5C and sunny, the next it’s 40F/4.4C and pouring, the next we have hail and impenetrable fog – and it feels like I am either in the car or at Sports Events, although that’s probably not true. Well, falling off the walking wagon is a personal failing that is correctable and I have not corrected it. When I have made it outside, usually thanks to my writing partner or my parents, I find myself overwhelmed by the beauty of the world around me. If only I could remember in the moment that being in nature and moving my body make everything better.
  • When I was at Home Goods ogling the organizational merch, I came across these pieces of art that I thought would be PERFECT for my kid’s room. The cheetah in the bathrobe is, I think, hilarious. (Carla’s response was, “What in the AI is that?”)

Friday Randomosity: Various Kinds of Pain Edition

It’s Friday and my mind, as per usual, is scattered. Let’s try to shuffle some of the disarray into more manageable piles. (To be clear, by “shuffle” I mean “complain a lot about inconsequential things.”)

  • This week has been full of headaches. Literal headaches. Are they from neck tension? Eye strain? Allergies? Too much gum chewing? Not enough water consumption? WHO KNOWS. Advil seems to help, but I need to have something in my stomach before I take Advil (so says my physician husband) and I don’t like eating first thing in the morning and that’s when they are worst. Perhaps I should ask him, how much something do I need to eat? If, like, a handful of cashews would suffice, maybe I could deal with that.
  • While I’m whining about aches and pains, let me tell you that my forearm pain persists. The exercises in the video I told you about here helped tremendously, but then the pain returned. I have been babying it. Trying to avoid lifting things with that hand, eschewing weight lifting of any sort, trying to sleep on my back instead of on that arm. Stretches and the exercises that helped so much originally. (I think I may have been a little aggressive with the massage aspect of the exercises yesterday; my arm is kind of throbbing today, when normally it only hurts when I lift something.) Probably I should go to my doctor… but I have been resisting that step because I feel like she won’t be able to DO anything. Offer sympathy? Recommend rest, ice, and pain medication? The very best case (realistic) scenario is that she refers me to a forearm pain specialist… but then I have to make the appointment and wait to see that doctor and do whatever tests and yada yada blah blah blah. Why yes I am aware I am being a HUGE CRABBY BABY about this.
  • How are you staying fit if you can’t do your normal fitness routine? My preferred workout is strength training with weights. But I simply cannot do that right now. My second preference is for walking, but I find that lately my back hurts after I come in from a walk. What is THAT about? Probably I need new shoes, but UGH. How am I supposed to participate in Elisabeth’s walking club if I’m not walking? It feels like the only option is yoga, so I guess I will see what Adriene has to offer. It’s just that I feel impatient when I try to do yoga. Impatient and also clunky and off kilter. I am realizing that those are reasons TO do yoga, not to avoid it.
  • I am in the process of transitioning to a new blog – with new URL and layout and everything – and that is a HUGE pain. I realize it will also be a bit of a pain for you as well, and I apologize in advance. Hopefully I’ll be able to figure out how to make this blog link automatically to the new one, once it’s all transitioned. I’m still trying to figure out how the new layout works. My free WordPress blog theme is so old that it is no longer supported, so I can’t recreate it on the new blog, which annoys me to no end. And the new blog theme doesn’t seem to work quite the same way, which is also frustrating and makes me feel very old and out of touch with technology. It’s all on WordPress, I don’t know why it doesn’t work the same way. Grump grump, crab crab.
  • Death has been on my mind a bit this week, so please skip this bullet if you aren’t up for THAT. I mean, we have the Passover and Easter stories, which are both as full of death as they are of hope. Also, I had a nightmare about my friend – in which I texted her old phone number because I missed her, and she responded, and then was furious at me because I hadn’t reached out to her (because I thought she was dead). In the dream, I so clearly remembered her wake, and yet I got to see her, in person, in the dream, and she was so very alive. I was so grateful that I had been wrong, and felt so guilty for having believed she was dead, and so devastated that I had her back in my life only for her to treat me with anger and coldness. When I finally woke up, I had a whole day of residual grief and guilt, on top of the renewed sense of loss that comes with having to confront that a truth you had accepted for many years is still true.
  • If you skipped the previous bullet, you should skip this one too. Death was with us at the Passover seder this week, too. The last time I’d been in our friends’ home, it was to honor the loss of their mother. I was grateful to see all the same faces, gathered this time in celebration instead of in mourning. But their mother’s absence was palpable. I wanted, so many times throughout the evening, to say her name, to acknowledge that she was not there. But in the concentric circles of closeness to the family, I am in one of the outer rings, and it did not feel appropriate. And yet. Isn’t one of the loneliest parts of loss the feeling that you are the only one who remembers your loved one? Wouldn’t it be a comfort to know that others are thinking of her too? The aftermath of loss is so unnecessarily complicated. I think we think that feel we are expected to move on from loss, or that we worry we will bring down the mood if we bring up a lost loved one in a celebratory space, or that we don’t want to provoke additional pain in those who are grieving by calling their loved one to mind (when, of course, our dead do not ever leave our thoughts). In the end, I did not mention her once; it never felt appropriate. And yet I wish I had had the courage to say something, even if it was the wrong thing. My current plan is to try to find the right words to say I missed her in the thank you note I will write to our host.
  • Let’s talk about something cheery and frivolous! After your thoughtful responses to my Easter basket conundrum, and a text from my husband that said something like “buy lots of candy and maybe one small present,” I did indeed go buy “lots of candy.” Like, waaaayyyyyyy too much candy. The small present is a book I bought on a whim. I read this book – and, in fact, much of the series – when I was a kid, so the nostalgia factor played a big part in my spur-of-the-moment purchase. I hope Carla likes it, but at the very least I will enjoy rereading it.
  • We are back to the dessert drawing board. I mentioned to Carla that her father had requested coconut cake or carrot cake for Easter dessert, and she said she doesn’t like either of those options. Well, neither do I. So we are trying to figure out something that sounds festive and springy and light and not terribly complicated. My vote is for this smashed raspberry cake (even though it sounds a little more complex than I was hoping for), but my husband wants to make a trifle (even though we do not have a trifle dish), and Carla wants a strawberry cake (for which I cannot find a recipe that sounds appealing).
  • While I was shopping for Easter candy, I wandered into the gardening aisle. Every year, I have grand plans to grow a bunch of things, despite a long history of lackluster results with getting things to grow, and this year is no exception. I bought A TON of seeds, tomato and zucchini and basil and dill and cilantro, but also a bunch of flower seeds, hollyhock and calendula and echinacea and more. I have never tried to grow flowers from seed before. We’ll see if I have any success at all. I’m still trying to revive my poor sickly palm plants. I was able to move them out to the sun porch this week, for some tropical weather. Although it is supposed to snow next week. These tumultuous weather patterns are not pleasant.
  • Speaking of which, Carla and I had a bit of excitement this week. We were driving home from school when my phone lit up with an emergency tornado warning alert. I thought the tornado warning was for the area around our home, so I kept driving. My husband texted that we should go to the mall or something, but that would have meant turning around, so I suggested I would drive us to his hospital and we could all wait out the tornado warning together. Well, okay, he said, but there’s a tornado warning here, too. Oh, great. I had not realized we were also driving through a tornado warning. If I have fixed any tornado knowledge in my brain, it is that being in a car during a tornado is a Bad Plan. It was at that moment that the wind picked up and rain started coming down in sheets. No one else driving around us seemed the least bit concerned – except, perhaps, for the guy on the motorcycle in front of us, who kept looking up at the sky. When lightning and thunder started out of nowhere, I turned into the nearest parking lot, grabbed Carla, and dashed into a restaurant. I was quite nervous at that point, and it was disorienting to burst into the restaurant, soaking wet, only to see staff and patrons behaving as though everything was totally normal. Carla’s school tornado drill training kicked in and she dragged me toward a table in the back of the restaurant, away from the windows and doors. While I was trying to figure out what to do – do I… order food??? – she said that we’d passed a sign for the bathrooms, which were downstairs, and she wanted us to go into the basement. Yes, good, let’s do that. There were only two other women down there. Apparently, no one seems to feel as freaked out by a tornado warning as I do???? We waited out the storm and everything was fine, but the whole experience was very weird. Tornados would occasionally swirl through my hometown in the summers, and my mother was very, very firm about always going into the basement to ride out the threat. But here, even pulling off the road seemed like an overreaction! Oh well. I would rather overreact than the alternative.
  • Carla, who was quite justifiably terrified by this experience, was primarily concerned for the cat. Who was at home, alone. Fortunately, we could watch him. My husband got me a pet camera for my birthday, and then he got a second one so we could check in on the cat while we were gone over spring break. (Lenny also had a cat sitter, he wasn’t alone all day every day.) So Carla was able to watch him while we were hunkered down in the restaurant basement. He spent the entire time on the kitchen table (where he is not allowed) and the kitchen island (where he is also not allowed), completely unperturbed by the thunder and lightning going on outside.
Looking directly at the camera, as if to say, “What are YOU going to do about it?”

That’s it for today, Internet. Happy holidays, to those who celebrate, and happy weekend to those who don’t.
