Dinners This Week

This weekend, our grocery store was out of yeast again. Well. They had single-serve packs of organic instant yeast for $1.09. But that seems a little desperate, to me, considering you can buy a three-pack of the non-organic instant yeast for something like $1.19. In only moderately related news, the yeast for baking was on the shelf right next to the nutritional yeast which seems like a situation rife with potential misunderstandings. I don’t even know what nutritional yeast is (I think you can put it on popcorn???) but I am pretty sure it won’t make your dough rise.

Also: almost completely out of pepperoni, except for two sad packages of gourmet pepperoni that no one in my house will eat. Hormel all the way, baby.

ALSO: This is the first time in six months that I haven’t purchased a jar of pickles. Carla proclaimed that the pickles from the most recent jar were “sour” (isn’t that… the point of pickles?) and hasn’t eaten one since.

I am glad to be back to a weekly grocery shopping schedule. It feels more normal, for one thing. Plus, we are definitely wasting less food.  (Although I still need to work on limiting my fruit buying.) The next thing I need to adjust my shopping to fit: Not having Carla around all day. She is no longer eating lunch and two snacks at home, which somehow adds up to a LOT less food (and pepperoni) I need to buy. We somehow only went through one and a half pints of tomatoes this week! Either Carla is getting tired of tomatoes, or perhaps she does the majority of her tomato-eating during the school day. Time will tell.

Here’s what we’re eating for dinner this week:

Dinners for the Week of September 14-20

There is no cocktail of the week this week. I have grown weary of cocktails. Well, more aptly, I have grown weary of making cocktails. It is much easier to open a bottle of wine, if one requires an alcoholic beverage. Or to mix a little grapefruit juice into half a can of seltzer, if one isn’t in the alcohol mood.

I am also making this purple plum torte, which I have made for a couple summers running and which I adore. Right now, plums are abundant, so I bought a bunch. If you haven’t tried this torte, it is VERY easy and SUPER delicious and the perfect summer-to-fall transitional dessert. Or snack. Or breakfast.

How are you, Internet? What are you eating this week?

  1. Oh god, nutritional yeast is TOTALLY DIFFERENT DO NOT PUT IT IN BREAD. I use it for flavourings, and you can make great dips/ pretend cheese with it. It’s great for vegans. That’s weird they would have them together, usually in my experience it’s in the natural food section. Lololol about the cocktails, that’s the whole reason I don’t drink cocktails much. Way easier to grab the corkscrew.

  2. I’m in the corkscrew crowd myself! It’s funny how quickly kids reactions to foods can change.I may have to make that plum torte considering I mentioned to The Husband I liked plums….we now have more plums than I can possibly consume.

  3. I hope that school is going well for Carla so far! We have had a lot of tex-mex food lately and my family, including me, is finally sick of it. The last thing was chicken enchiladas on Monday night. I have to press Pause on that style for a while, I guess. Tonight it’s pasta with chicken, though I haven’t figured out what the sauce/flavor will be. Probably just a simple garlic/parmesan.

I recently made this simple shredded salad, and LOVE IT: romaine sliced up very thin, spinach leaves, torn, shredded red cabbage, strips of carrot (like, I peel it with a peeler, but INTO the salad bowl. Had it with Italian dressing once, planning on adding sunflower kernels and Asian dressing today. YUMMY.

  4. I made Chicken Paprikas using your recipe last night. Wow! We really enjoyed it. I almost left out the potato because noodles and potatoes? So glad I didn’t leave it out because that was my favorite part – the potato chunks with the yummy sauce. Other meals this week include pan fried chicken thighs (Pioneer Woman recipe served over rice with green beans), beef stew, and salmon with cilantro & almond pesto.

      • I haven’t found The One yet either. I used an instant pot recipe last year that involved tomato sauce? Or tomato paste? And tapioca (!?) which was pretty good but not The One for me but my husband liked it. Can’t remember now where I got it. I usually just do a very basic beef stew – nothing special. But always looking for ideas. 😋

  5. That plum torte looks really good.

Beth made fried okra sandwiches and fried halloumi on Sunday. I made potato-beet salad with veggie sausage on Monday and tomato-cabbage-rice soup with a different kind of veggie sausage last night. Tonight I’m making broccoli melts and apple slices. Thursday North will make sushi if they’re well enough. Friday is frozen pizza. Saturday Noah and I are making pasta with corn, tomatoes, & zucchini. (He prefers to cook with people and North prefers to cook alone, which is interesting because in general he’s more of a lone wolf and they are more social.)
