Rule #22:
Say “I love you.”
Husband and I say “I love you” so often it’s almost like a nervous tic or a reflex.
A few years ago, he said, “I think we say it too often. Maybe we should cut back on saying it.”
So we tried.
But it didn’t take.
A few days of suppressing our “I love you” urge, and we were back to saying it fifty times a day.
And you know what? I’m glad. If something horrible were to happen, we would know without question that we were loved. That’s why our last words to each other – before bed, before leaving for work, before heading to the gym or the grocery store or ending a phone call – are “I love you.”
Love the new header-
I went and got Little Bee on Friday-it is kind of slow going-I hope more is going to happen soon…..
Thanks! I actually took the header photo, in the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris last year during our honeymoon. (Most of the header photos are courtesy of my husband.)
I hope others comment on Little Bee, too! It will be interesting to see if anyone likes it or if I have crazy bad taste in books. 🙂
you know, my best friend and her husband say that they don’t say it very often because if they say it too much, then it loses its meaning. but i don’t actually agree with that… so, i say, say I love you all the time!!
Yeah, that was my husband’s thought when we tried to stop. I totally see the logic behind that… But for us, it has meaning every single time we utter it. And I love that our love for each other is always right on the tip of our tongues.
My husband is one of THOSE. I am NOT. It’s a fine line we walk. But I wish he were one of these. Sigh!
I love it. My husband and I do the same thing. And it IS true. There will never be any doubt. As long as you show you love him, too, which it seems you’re doing, there will truly be no doubt.
My husband and I are like this too. I’ll say “I love you” sometimes when I am just leaving him in the living room to go to another room.
I think that is the best nervous tick to have! Too many “I love yous” never hurt a marriage!
Heck, I’ll even text him a “Love you” while he’s at work. *wry smile* Kinehora, next month is our 8 year wedding anniversary. 🙂
We say it a ton, too, but I figure it’s better to say it freely and often than not at all. 🙂
in answer to your question, did you ever think to bleach the entire dress, then dye it? i don’t know if it would work or not, though….what type of material is the dress made of?
The flowers are beautiful. It looks like a professional photo!
I don’t think there is a perfect number of times to say “I love you.” Most couples I know don’t say it nearly enough!
Us too – couldn’t agree more!
We’re the same way. We had a conversation about it, and it was interesting because I had said I think that actions of love are better than words, back long before we were dating… so when we started dating B-man didn’t say “I love you” very much. I called him out on it and he was like “Three years ago you told me…” and I definitely realized the importance of having both the words “I love you” and doing something about it – so we try to do more for each other, instead of only depending on the words.
More than 2 cents, I’m chatty cathy today. lol.
Us too! Some of our friends make fun of us because we say it so much, even around others. I don’t even notice we say it so much, but I do know that both of us throws in an “I love you” at least every time we get off the phone and any time any one leaves. I mean you just never know what can happen and I want him to always know 🙂
Love the header as well. Props to husby! This is so wise. After reading A little pink in a world of camo, I’ve been a little more clingy when Q leaves then normal… ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Good rule.
Hey Mrs. D!
Well, with my wedding coming up in just a few weeks I’m getting that panic-y cold feet that everyone talks about. Dr. is my soulmate and it’s a dream come true to marry him, but if there was one thing I could change about him it would be his profession. I’m almost finished my own PhD and being the competitive person I am, I’m scared to loose myself and simply become “Mrs. D”. I’ve worked so hard! I have to say that it’s really been great to read your blog and to know that I’m not alone, and it’s possible to be a loving wife and not have to fall into that typical doctor’s child-bearing-housewife I fear! You’re a hilarious writer and I’ll make sure to check back often.
Cheers,
Soon to be Mrs. (Dr.) D
I love saying “I love you” to the fiance. We both know how much the other one cares and there is never any awkwardness because we are used to expressing it. I’m glad you didn’t give it up!
That’s adorable. We do it to – and never once am I not sincere. It’s so good to be comfortable with someone you can confess your love to them every single time they call you from the store to ask you if there’s enough eggs for the week. You’re quite lucky 🙂
I would rather say it too often and hear it too often than not enough. 🙂
I love it! I am with JennyMac…I want to hear it rather than not! Enjoy each I love you. Life is way too short.
Glad we’re not the only ones. We say it all the time and EVERY time we get off the phone!
Love it! Glad to hear my manpanion and I aren’t the only ones dropping L-bombs every chance we get. In fact, one of our terms of endearment for each other has become “Love,” as in “Hey Love, will you pass the salt?” or “You picked up my dry cleaning!? Thanks, Love!” Which is new for me, in a good way. 🙂
I love this thought! I don’t think you can ever tell each other that too much. Once you have kids, it’s nice for them to hear mom and dad say it to each other, over and over again, too. It’s an important habit that too many people don’t develop, and it’s so easy!
We do the same thing.
I think it’s extremely important and I (like you) would never change it for the world 😉
