Five for Friday

The lovely Michelle of MG Doodle Studio submitted five fun questions on my Ask Me Anything form. Thanks, Michelle!

Let’s do this!

Which actress would play you in a movie about your life?

Well, I had 100% no idea how to answer this, and I am too embarrassed to ask my offline friends. So I did something uncharacteristic and asked ChatGPT to analyze my blog and make a suggestion. Holy creeparama, Batman. But also, I was quite flattered by the response? Which is additionally creepy. (ChatGPT, are you flirting with me?!?)

The main choice was Kathryn Hahn, and wow. Yes, I WOULD like Kathryn Hahn to play me in a movie thank you. She is a delight.

The other suggestions were Tina Fey, Amy Ryan, and Julia Louis Dreyfus, all of whom are women whose tremendous talent and hilarity I admire, and who possess hair I would do a lot of unsavory things to have for myself.

What’s a current trend you just don’t get?

I do not understand barrel jeans. Perhaps this is because I already have plenty of volume in the hip and thigh area. Perhaps this is because I have spent my entire adult life trying NOT to call attention to the hip and thigh area. Either way, I don’t get it.

What is your favorite time of day?

I am a morning person, through and through. My favorite time is the very early morning before anyone else is awake (except the cat) and I can sip tea and read blogs in sleepy silence.

If you could go anywhere for a week alone, where would you go?

Why is this question SO VERY HARD??? I don’t think I’d go to a non-English-speaking location, because I get too nervous navigating those cities by myself. My first impulse was to go to my parents’ summer home, but I think I might feel too isolated by myself? And I would worry about bears. Maybe I would go to Big Sky? I am assuming, in this fantasy, money is no object. So I would go to a beautiful home on the slopes, and I would write and ski and admire the scenery.

What is something that would surprise your readers?

I feel like I’m pretty chatty in my blog posts, so I think it would surprise you to find that I am Extremely Shy in person. I have a really hard time coming up with things to say, and often default to small talk topics in one-on-one conversation. If you are spending time with me, prepare for a lot of long silences.

What do you think? Would you choose Kathryn Hahn to play me in a movie? Do you know why barrel jeans are so popular right now? Does it surprise you to know I’m so shy? Do you have any questions you’d like me to answer in a future post? Submit your burning queries on my Ask Me Anything page right here.

Also, feel free to answer Michelle’s questions for yourself – either in the comments or on your own blog.

  1. I agree with Sarah… this has “Steal This Blog Post” written it all over it. Which is exactly what I shall do. (Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right???)

  2. Michelle asks great questions! I hear you on the barrel jeans, spending an entire life trying not to call attention to anything below my waist, and the ability to blab on the internet but not be able to carry on a conversation.

Actress – I totally went to Chattie with this and came away very flattered. Amy Adams, Rachel McAdams, and Jennifer Garner were the picks.

Trend – all protein all the time. I can’t wait until this trend goes away.

Fav time of day – mornings FTW!

Week alone – hey I actually do this all the time! Since money is no object, I would rent a lakeside house on Kelleys Island.

Surprise – I’m right there with you on Team Shy. I’ve found two groups of humans that I can talk to about anything, and those are bloggers and people who follow the FIRE movement (financial independence retire early – aka money nerds). If I’m talking to a civilian, it’s going to be a round of hi, how’s the weather, and bye.

    • Yes, all the way to Chattie’s picks for your onscreen rep! Those all work exceedingly well.

Hahahaha — all protein all the time. It has really escalated to a point that feels like satire.

Team shy FTW! I do like my fellow Shys, though. Less pressure to chat and more comfort with the occasional quiet stretch.

  3. Wow, Chat did a good job! I like the Tina Fey choice.

Yep, also shy. Is this a blogger thing? I wonder if shy people are more likely to take up blogging, where they can write everything they want to say instead of having to speak.

Now I’m fantasizing about having a week alone. Somewhere with trails to run on and bookstores…

    • Listen, I AM NOT SHY. I am loud, obnoxious, and live to be the center of attention. LOL. My blog is just an offshoot of that, you know? But, also, I sort of don’t like most people, so being alone is pretty great.

  4. Oooh! I’m so excited that you answered my questions! I love your answers! What a great idea to ask Chatty about what actress would play you, and even though I’ve only ever seen one photo of you, I’d say Kathryn Hahn is a great choice! (Chatty says I should be played by Patricia Clarkson. I’m so flattered! I loved her as the mom in Easy A.) I am also very shy. I think we’d get along great! I’ll come to see you at your dream home in Big Sky and we can read quietly for a few hours. Thank you for answering my questions!

  5. I think Kathryn Hahn would make a great Suzanne.

I think Ally Sheedy would play me, but maybe I’m flattering myself? Maybe Patricia Heaton, because I’m such a mom and I loved her in The Middle.

    • Oooooh I love Patricia Heaton! The only Ally Sheedy reference I have is from The Breakfast Club, which is hard to reconcile with an adult. But maybe that just means I need to seek out more Ally Sheedy content?!

  6. I’m not at all surprised to hear you are shy in person. I am, too. I think a lot of writers are, not all, but a lot.

I don’t have to think about it at all. I’d go to the beach, probably Rehoboth.

  7. I love all the choices you got for an actress playing you in a movie! 🙂

I’m a long-time hard-core bootcut jeans girl. I also know don’t mind straight cut, so long as they’re slim leg – I want the jeans to fit close to my hips/thighs (even though they are luscious, lol).

I used to take myself on a solo vacation every-other summer, for my birthday. I’d go to my favorite mountain lake, book a cabin for the week, and enjoy the quiet. Just me, a pile of books, and my favorite spot 🙂

    • Which actor would play you in a movie about your life? Helen Hunt, probably. We share a similar look.
    • What’s a current trend you just don’t get? Acting like the Democrats won this week instead of that the Republicans lost.
    • What is your favorite time of day? Getting into bed.
    • If you could go anywhere for a week alone, where would you go? A deserted island.
    • What is something that would surprise your readers? Are there any surprises after more than 20 years?
  8. “…who possess hair I would do a lot of unsavory things to have for myself.” I literally laughed at that! Don’t we all have hair envy to that degree?

I’m going to be honest, I do NOT understand a lot of “trends” but especially barrel jeans. So I just tend to ignore them and wear what I like.

No, I am not surprised at all that you are shy in real life. I am too. I have a feeling we could sit comfortably, in silence, together and be perfectly content.

  9. I don’t get the barrel jeans either. I’ll have to think about the person to play me. That’s a harder question than one thinks! I get the shy thing. Same here. An introvert with a public life. For a week — back to England. It is always England.

  10. I also don’t get barrel jeans. I do see people wearing barrel jeans and look good but those same people would probably also look good in other jeans styles as well.

If I were to go somewhere alone for a week it would be a big city like New York or Paris or a snowy place with a fire place to read for a week straight. I enjoy the hustle and bustle of a city and just walking around.

  11. There are so many jean types nowadays that I don’t understand. I’m still loving my skinny jeans, and if that’s wrong – I don’t wanna be right. Although, I do like some other types, but barrell jeans? Not sure I appreciate those.

These are fun questions. Nicely done, Michelle G.

I think Joan Cusack would play me, because I have that sort of expressive face like her. I believe she was nicknamed rubber face in her youth. I can’t say anyone every called me that, but I could’ve been.

I’m not surprised to learn that you are shy. After reading your blog for years, I have surmised that you tend to be a shy person. I find it hard to believe that you would struggle to converse though. No chance small talk is your go to.

  12. I’m so out of the loop that I don’t even know what barrel jeans are. I’ll look them up. I’m not sure who would play me–probably someone like Sally Field. A week alone? The Oregon coast possibly, close to coffee shops, quirky businesses and with many books.

  13. Well, you made me do it. I had Chat analyze my blog, and he came back with Jean Smart. I’m not mad about it; I’ve always liked her.

I will admit I don’t know what barrel jeans are, but I don’t think they would look good on my short little body. I’d probably look like a tree stump or something. Oh lord, I had to go look. Those are even worse than I imagined.

  14. I think barrel jeans look so good on other people, but not on me! My legs are too short, and yes, with the hips and thighs.

I love Kathryn Hahn and Tina Fey! They are both delightful, so yes, you can have them both play you—in two movies.

  15. I also don’t get barrel jeans — they are not a good match for my body shape — but some people do look good in them.

I’m also quiet in person until I get to know you and even don’t mind being on the listening side of conversations.
