Five Weird Things for Friday

Listen, we are all super weird in our own way. Here are five weird things about me.

  • I cannot stand smelling cold food, if that food is supposed to be served hot. A cold peach, fine. Cold milk, fine. Ice cream, well, I’m not sure ice cream has a scent? But cold spaghetti sauce? Cold soup? Cold hamburger? No thank you. Sometimes my husband will ask me to give a container of leftovers a sniff, to make sure it’s still good to eat. In which case I say, you’re on your own, buddy. It should not surprise you that I will not eat supposed-to-be-hot-food when it is cold, either.
    • Getting into an unmade bed squicks me out. Once upon a time, I did not make my bed every day. But that time is now in my distant past. And I cannot fathom how I got into rumpled sheets every night. No. I need my sheets to be smooth and tight. The only exception to this if I get out of bed in the middle of the night to pee.

      • Relatedly: I refuse to turn on the lights after I’ve gone to sleep. As you are well aware, sleep is already not my friend. Why would I increase my chances of staying awake by turning on the light? No. If I need the bathroom or to check on my kid or to get a glass of water or to deter the cat from doing whatever it is that is making that noise, I leave the lights off. We do have plentiful nightlights throughout our house, which helps. If I’m in an unfamiliar place, I may be pressed to turn on a light out of necessity, but then I use the pirate trick of keeping one eye tightly closed so that I can return to darkness as swiftly as possible.

        • The inside of a kitchen sink is a No Touch Zone. Some people will swipe, say, vegetable scraps into the drain with their hands. I know someone who will wash her hands, and then tap her clean hands against the wall of the sink closest to her. I do not understand this. The sink is where all the yuck goes. That’s where I scrape all the dishes, that’s where I rinse off forks that have touched raw chicken, or where I wash bowls that have contained raw eggs. I clean the inside of my sink every night, but I don’t necessarily scour it every time I rinse a dish, you know? There are particles of countless foods and meals and cat food in there. WHY would I ever touch it with my hands? Especially if I do not then wash my hands?
          • After I’ve finished a good book, I don’t like to put it away. We have lots of bookshelves in our house, and they are organized by a few rough categories (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, travel, language), so it would be super easy to simply file a finished book in its spot. But when I’ve really enjoyed a book, I like to keep it near me. My husband even bought me a special bookshelf to keep in our bedroom so that I can keep a selection of books – both to-be-read and already-read – nearby. Some books stay on my nightstand or in this special bookshelf for months or years until I feel ready to part with them.

Now tell me something weird about you.

            1. I am here for the weird! Not only do I not like smelling cold food that should be hot, but I also hate it when someone asks me to sniff to back up their opinion that food might be a little off. They already know the answer!!!

I keep meaning to add a nightlight and a flashlight to my travel stuff. Most of the places that I stay already have nightlights, but not always. It’s easy for me to find my way around my own house at night (I just have to inch very carefully in case Doggo has decided to sleep in the path between the bed and the bathroom), but not so much in a new place.

Agree that I do not ever want to touch the inside of a sink, and also I clean up after myself and don’t leave food scraps behind – that’s still a work in progress for other members of the family. Your meme reminds me of another peeve, which is when people wear gloves but don’t take them off or change them when they move to a non-dirty task – such as going from washing the dishes to drying the dishes. Ewwww…

I know the special feels for a book that was so good that you want to keep it by your side. Nothing weird about that at all!

            2. My weirdest thing is that I have a primary bathroom to myself and it has two sinks and I use one of the sinks for its intended purpose and I use the other sink as a temporary trash can. I gather everything up in it and throw it away properly every day or two but in the meantime, if I have a wrapper or some loose hairs that come out of my brush? They go in there. I should just put a small trash can on the counter or something but no, I am just living like an animal with a sink full of trash.

            3. I love learning about your quirks! I also do not turn the lights on in the middle of the night, and I make sure I don’t look in the bathroom mirror in the dark (some old scary tale is deep in my mind there). I also can not set the microwave for a number ending in 0 or 5, it has to be 1:01 for a minute, etc.

            4. LOL at herewegoajen’s trash sink, and collmart’s microwave timer. I think this is going to be a good comment thread to come back to.

I am fully anti turning on lights at night. Even when my daughter was a newborn, we just used a nightlight to change her and nurse her and so on. It was never difficult to put her back to sleep after, or to go back to sleep myself, and maybe that was why.

I love that your husband made you a special bookshelf for recently completed books, that is charming.

I’m going to have to come back on the weird thing. I know when I was a kid I used to sign things with my first and last name, even a Mother’s Day card.

            5. I didn’t regularly make my bed until I was in my 40s, but I have come to appreciate getting into a made bed and I don’t think I’ll ever go back. The lights off thing at night is just logical, not weird at all. My recently finished books are scattered in piles all over the house but that’s because I don’t have room on my bookshelves for more.

The last comment reminded me that I won’t set the microwave for 45 seconds because of the current occupant of the White House. It was 44 during his first term and 46 now. Probably one of my least effective acts of resistance, but it serves as a little reminder to do other things.

            6. I am here for your Schitts’ Creek gifs!

I also will not get into an unmade bed but fortunately, this is not a thing I am ever forced to do. Ugh ugh UGH.

I won’t wash the dishes without gloves on. I honestly cannot understand how anyone can!

I don’t turn on the lights either after I’m in bed but our ensuite has these low automatic lights that are on a sensor, so no one kills themselves running into things in the bathroom when we get up at night. There is no way to turn them off, so I have just gotten used to it.

I will eventually put away a book that I love after I finish it, but it will take me a few days. Sometimes I just pick it up and hold it.

            7. If there’s a universal on symbol on something (circle with a straight line breaking the circumference – e.g. on a car radio etc) then it has to be left facing north. The similar ones covering the power points in a car and usually saying 12V must also be adjusted straight. The volume on the television has to be an even number. All cans, packets etc in kitchen cupboards must face forwards and be squared off. All mugs must be lined up and their handles must be at the same angle. Etc etc! 🤷🏻‍♀️

            8. I’m with you on the unmade bed. I not only love the smooth sheets, but I feel like no bug could have crawled into my bed when I wasn’t in there. I don’t like surprises! The food thing doesn’t bother me although I absolutely hate touching raw meat. And I detest the smell of cooking hamburger. When I was pregnant it made me even more nauseated.

            9. I’m with you on every single one of these things—wow, I feel so much less alone. Thank you for this. 💜

I always have to wear slippers inside because I can’t stand the way the floor feels under my feet. In winter, I switch to socks so I don’t need them, but in summer it’s slippers only. And if I go to someone else’s house in summer without them, I get totally creeped out.

            10. love your Schitt’s Creek gifs. That little Canadian show that went big! Dont want to get into an unmade bed, and never turn a light on when I get up at night. That just makes sense as bright lights stim your brain. We have 2 windows in our ensuite so it is never very dark. Not sure about the smelling of could food?? But our uniqueness is what makes the world interesting!

            11. We are all weird, aren’t we?

Aside from the cold food thing, these don’t surprise me very much. I love nightlights because I also refuse to turn on a light in the dead of night.

I loathe the smell of cooked food after dinner. Like, it’s all fun and games while preparing a meal, and eating a meal, but once I’m done and the kitchen is clean, I NEED to get the smell out, especially if it is meat-related. This is probably why I use our outdoor grill SO much.

            12. First of all- I LOVE that special bookshelf! Love it!!! I’m trying to think where it could go in my house. I know Stephany has a bookshelf in her room for all her favorite books. I want one too.

If I wake up in the middle of the night, there’s a very real danger that I might have trouble falling back- so I NEVER turn on a light, and I also never look at the time. And, I never talk. It took a while for my husband to understand this, but now he knows that anything he says or asks will be answered with a grunt, so he’s given up.

For food- I hate tasting things in the middle of cooking. Like, I don’t like to eat foods until they’re done. And I can’t stand eating raw dough or batter of any kind- ew.

            13. I cannot STAND holiday linens. Christmas napkins? Easter tablecloth? I HATE them so so much and judge people who have them so harshly. I try not to, but gosh it is the strongest negative reaction…

            14. I love the special bookshelf! That is so sweet!

I cannot stand the feel of wood that is not perfectly smooth. My husband very kindly tries to get me kitchen gadgets from time to time, but I cannot handle the feel of wood ones (e.g., we have a very nice cutting board that I will not touch). He got me a Danish dough whisk when I started making sourdough. It works shockingly well but has a wooden handle. So I wear an oven mitt whenever I use it. My children are baffled by this behavior, but it works.

            15. I would never turn on the lights once I have been sleeping either. We have nightlights all over the house so it’s not necessary. Are there people who actually turn on the light after they’ve been asleep like to go to the bathroom? I think those are the strange people, not us!!

I think one of my quirks is that I only like coffee/coffee-flavored things hot. I can’t drink cold brew or even eat coffee icecream. I wish I liked cold brew as that sounds better to drink in the summer but cold coffee makes me want to throw up a little.

            16. I assume the cat has walked on everything in our house and treat every surface as if it has fecal matter on it. That means the counter, the desk, the table, the sink – all of it. I don’t think it’s weird that you don’t touch the inside of the sink – I think it makes a lot of sense.

My weird thing is that I hate breakfast meat and if I wake up to the smell of meat cooking, I will vomit. This isn’t a problem in our mostly vegetarian household, but let’s say I’m at someone’s house on Thanksgiving morning. The smell of cooking turkey at 7am – GAG.

            17. Keeping your recently-read books close by is so dear. I totally relate to not wanting to relegate them immediately back to a random bookcase. They deserve a place of honor!

My weird thing is I don’t like going barefoot in the house (slippers in the winter, running recovery sandals at all other times), and I have to have sunglasses on when it’s bright outside (even if it’s still overcast). I can’t stand squinting.

            18. I am HERE for quirky behavior! The unmade bed thing makes me laugh because I so rarely make my bed. I’m like, “If I’m just going back into it, why make bed?!” I should be better about this.

I also like keeping my finished books around before I put them back on my bookshelf! Sometimes that’s because I know I want to take a picture of the book first for my IG round-up, and mostly it’s because I’m lazy. lol

My quirky thing is that if I’m getting ice out of the freezer and one drops on the floor, I just let it stay there, melt, and then dry. It’s only me living here, and it always falls in a corner of the kitchen that wouldn’t make me slip, so eh.
