Leaving the fridge door open while I “real quick” pour half-and-half into my tea.
Buying myself peanut butter M&Ms/Sour Patch Kids Hearts/Rolos for my office, promising to “just have a few at a time,” and then eating the whole family size bag in a few days.

Buying gifts for people, then chickening out about sending them.
Creating giveaways on my blog and then completely forgetting about them for weeks on end.
Buying (virtually) the same clothes over and over. I was browsing Boden the other day for dress possibilities and ended up putting THREE navy blue A-line dresses in my cart. (I already own two navy dresses.)
Checking hardcover books out from the library on a whim and never reading them.

Sending something to the printer, immediately forgetting about it, then hearing the printer thump and whir and being CERTAIN a murderer is thumping and whirring through the house. You know. As murderers are wont to do.
Growing my nails out, then, when one inevitably chips/tears, biting them all off.
Adding hot sauce to food without tasting it first (it’s not the food, it’s that I realllllly love hot sauce).
Buying a bunch of green veggies with the aim of eating them for lunches/dinners and then deciding they are too much work for today so I’ll prep them tomorrow until they all rot.
Also: buying a bunch of veggies, washing, them, cutting them, stowing them in the fridge for easy snacking… and then reaching for cheese and crackers or chips or Sour Patch Kids Hearts instead until they all rot.
Opening dozens of tabs and then never revisiting them or closing them again. See also: never, ever, ever achieving inbox zero because I save so many emails for some reason.

Making (unintentionally) weird faces in photos. I’m ALWAYS closing my eyes just as someone snaps the picture, or if my eyes happen to be open, I look like I’m riding a pharmaceutical high, and if my eyes are okay, my arms are weird (I have no idea how to hold my arms in photos).
Opening text messages, writing texts, and forgetting to hit “send.”
Cloistering myself in my house for weeks on end until I become lonely/starved for attention and then overscheduling my introvert self until I feel completely overstimulated and never want to see another human again.
Buying books that I am DESPERATE to read and then allowing them to languish unopened on my shelves for years.

Half-drafting blog posts and never posting them. (I started this one in September.)
I hear you… and have had my share of fresh healthy green things rot alongside my good intentions. But we differ on the books, I read everything too quickly and am always running out.
Ha! The last one is PERFECT.
I could basically say this with you word-for-word:”Making (unintentionally) weird faces in photos. I’m ALWAYS closing my eyes just as someone snaps the picture, or if my eyes happen to be open, I look like I’m riding a pharmaceutical high, and if my eyes are okay, my arms are weird (I have no idea how to hold my arms in photos).” I just do not know what to do with my arms (or hands) and my eyes are almost always half closed. It drives my family nuts. Seriously, if someone takes a dozen pictures, it’s pretty much a guarantee that at least 3/4 of them will have me with my eyes closed. I think there is a genetic component to it? One of my sisters and my dad and one of my nieces all have the same issue. I feel like my eyelids are perpetually half closed? And if I DO purposefully try to keep my eyes open, I look deranged. It’s one of the big reasons I’ve loved PRK surgery so much – I can hide my eyes with sunglasses.
“As murderers are wont to do” – haha! You crack me up.
I also leave the fridge door open when I do some small task. I never really thought about it that much before (my mother does the same, so I just chalked it up to nurture) but I think maybe it’s because whenever you open the fridge door, there is usually a little whoosh sound/feel of air escaping? And to me, leaving the door open just feels like less air is lost than if there are two whooshes right in a row? I don’t actually care if that makes scientific sense, it’s the way my brain feels about it!
I also have a crisper drawer full of crudité veggies that I need to prep (cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, cucumber). When in the past I manage to prep them and make up a big platter, I put it out with every dinner and I find it so enjoyable to have some little crunchy nibbles to intersperse with whatever heavy wintertime hibernation meal we’re having. But actually cutting things up and putting them on the tray just seems like so much work right now, and I highly suspect they’re all going to rot.
This gave me a good laugh! I’m very bad about letting vegetables rot! A bag of M&Ms is tough – it just lends itself to taking a nice handful…several times…until they’re gone!
I leave the fridge door open for “real quick” half-and-half, too! Mine is a newer fridge, though, so it “yells” (beeps) at me when I do that. Rude.
My British self is equally horrified by the fact that you put half and half in tea!! 🤢. Semi-skimmed milk (2%) at most please!
I leave the fridge door open as I’m making dinner too… It drives my KIDS mad! I think that’s so rude because they’re not very eco-conscious neither do they pay the bills or anything.
Also guilty of buying the same clothes–I think that’s a universal flaw?
And the weird photos–are we psyche twins?!?
I really liked _The Guest_ and _The Whispers_ And off to look up the other two…
And oh–a long time ago, you wondered if an eyebrow tat would be like Sharpie-ing them in, and that made me wonder what if… and I did… and… it kind of works!
I’m the same with the veggies, ugh! They sound good but are too much work. 🙁 I love Elly Griffiths.

The Whispers is so good, you’re going to LOVE it when you get to it!
Someone told me the key to a good photo is to have a hand on a hip, so your arm isn’t flat against your body. I think it works! It’s a flattering angle!
If the polish on one of my nails starts to lift, I start to chip it all off. It’s really hard on my nails, which look shaggy and ragged when I do that. I want to stop this but I can’t!
Oh also, that’s the reason I have to be very careful about buying chips. I don’t care too much about sweets, but an open bag of chips? Oooh baby come to mama.
Ha HAAAAAA all of this, but especially the arms in photos, DO MY ARMS LOOK THIS WEIRD AND AWKWARD ALL THE TIME.
I don’t do it anymore, but I used to buy hardcovers I desperately wanted and ‘save’ them until the book had come out in paperback. Same with the hardcover library books – I keep them until they’re overdue and then read them frantically.
I don’t have ‘a few of anything’ at a time.
I did not like The Whispers that much. Dark Corners was not bad, but not as good as Night Swim.
I never leave the fridge door open, simply because I’m afraid I will smash into it and rip it off the fridge. Same with the washer door. My clumsiness knows no bounds.
“Opening dozens of tabs and then never revisiting them or closing them again. See also: never, ever, ever achieving inbox zero because I save so many emails for some reason.” This is ME! I currently have at least 16 open tabs on my browser right now.
Hey, some posts just need time to marinate before they are published!
It’s safe to say that I can relate to every word that you wrote here.
I especially feel you on the hands and photos issue. What are we supposed to do with our hands! If I can put them around another person that works. But wow did I feel awkward when I had to get a headshot taken this week!!
HA! I absolutely cannot take a decent photo, and I swear it didn’t used to be like that. Is this some “aging” thing??? I posted a photo on my blog today of our blogger meetup, and after we took that photo and I looked at it my first thought was “wow, I really don’t know how to pose for photos.” I give up. Oh, and if it’s a closeup of my face (which I try to avoid) I look like I have narcolepsy. SIGH.
You are definitely dooming yourself with that bag of candy!!! I would never trust myself with something like that around. And, I’ve been doing the same thing with the refrigerator… is it really that hard to close the door and then open it again???
I do the same with the fridge! My husband takes out the half and half and puts it on the counter then forgets to put it away, so I think our method is better 🙂 I think if I wrote a post and didn’t publish it right away, I would never publish any posts because I would overthink it and feel it was terrible.
SAME WITH THE CANDY. SAME SAME SAME.
I’m a salty person, and I resent that Kettle Chips has a single serving that they put in a bag labeled ‘sharing size’. So wrong.
I love that you started this post last year. That made me LOL, as did the bit about biting your nails once one chips. Somehow I thought once I got to be an adult I’d have it all figured out. HA!
I just can NEVER figure out the right way to stand for a photo. Where do my hands go? Am I supposed to bend a knee? Is my smile too awkward? Ughhh. Thankful for live photos, though, because at least then we can find a version where everyone has their eyes open!
I cannot keep candy in my house. CANNOT. (And yet I do.)
I loved this post so much. How beautifully human it all is.
That is all.
Wasn’t your fridge locking you out if you tried to open it twice in quick succession? Is that a weird detail from someone on the internet to recall? Because it seems like the 20 second thing could be learned behavior from that…
Shared misery is half the misery… so lemme tell you about my “unread book” shelf… it’s like all my shelves right now, not sure why I do this…
It seems like you are just like a regular person. BRAVO. 🤣 I’m laughing so hard at you because I do a lot of the same stuff and here we are, just living out the dream!
This was such a fun post to read! I can relate to many of these habits. Books, veggies, refrigerator door… So great. Thanks for lightening up my day!
this is such a fun post! I have many: bitting nails, keep doors open (all doors!), open tabs that I think I’ll read them later but don’t; keep reading book reviews while can’t finish the current ones. such much more!
