Passive Aggressive Morning

This morning has not started off on the right foot.

First of all, I was awakened 10 minutes before my alarm went off by my husband’s alarm. Which he’d forgotten to turn off before he’d skipped off into the bathroom to luxuriate under the warm water of a morning shower.

Do you see how I portray him as gleefully leaving the alarm on to bother me and then escaping to a spa-like oasis? That is how I FELT, although I’m sure that’s not what he INTENDED. Because he is kind and normally very careful about turning off his alarm so as not to wake his morning grouch sleeping beauty of a wife.

Then I did work for an hour. After completing two projects – which is very satisfying – I heard a loud metallic banging from outside the window.

Turns out, some maintenance workers were preparing for maintenance of some sort right outside my apartment. And one maintenance worker had apparently spotted some crusty gunk of some sort inside his wheelbarrow and he was using a sledgehammer to remove it. Loudly. And with much gusto.

It was 8:05 in the morning, Internet.

Even if that is a perfectly fine hour for doing maintenance – which, if I were still sleeping, it would most certainly NOT be – it is DEFINITELY not a perfectly fine hour for using a heavy metal sledgehammer to thwack the dirt out of your giant metal wheelbarrow.

8:05 in the morning.

So I did what any grouchy normal person would do.

I slammed the window shut very loudly, to point out that the maintenance workers are giant noisy jerkwads who are BOTHERING me.

And I immediately scampered away from the window so that the maintenance workers wouldn’t see me.

My only regret is that I didn’t get to see their looks of ambivalence leering glee apologetic shock when I slammed the window.

It worked, by the way. They stopped “cleaning” the wheelbarrow with the sledgehammer and are now jackhammering something in the distance.

Now I am self-medicating my passive aggression with a Honey Crisp apple, some English Breakfast tea, and a quick blog fix before I once again immerse myself in work.

  1. It’s always when I want it to be quiet that things like this happen. The kids next door always kick soccer balls up against the fence when I go to bed early.

  2. Whenever there is construction outside my work window it always turns me into a sour mood. I realize they have work to do and can’t wait until it’s convenient for me…but I wish there was a way to completely block out the loud noise, even after my window is closed! But at 8:05? I would have been grumpy, too.

  3. Thank goodness you were already awake when they started sledge-hammering! It could have been so much worse! Still, though…8:05 a.m.? NO.

In South Florida, my mother’s landscapers routinely come and cut the lawn before 7 a.m. I get that it’s hot during the day and that they need to start early, but I do get peeved when I’m home on VACATION and I’m awakened by lawnmowers at 6:25 a.m.

  4. Could be worse! I was had maitenance come into my apartment at like… 8… and I was still sleeping… in my bed… I may have been in a slight state of undress. I guess I didn’t hear them knocking so they let themselves in (which, normally is fine) and headed toward my master bathroom to fix my toilet (for which I am grateful) but I kind of wish it hadn’t been at 8 am. When I was still in bed. 1 pm would’ve been better. lol

  5. I got unnecessarily aggravated Monday when I took the kids to the zoo and someone was jackhammering as I was unsuccessfully trying to read the zoo map. Which makes no sense, because it’s not as if the jackhammering was impeding my ability to read a map, I just suck at reading maps. And that is my very boring story about jackhammering and map reading. Your jackhammering story was much better!

Also, could I say jackhammering any more in this comment??

  6. hahahahaha I love that you ran away! Do you look straight ahead when you cut a person off in traffic too? Because I don’t. I STARE them down! Which is what I would do if I was in your shoes this morning. lol Stare with a very mean/hurtful look.

  7. I live on a corner of a (typically) very quiet side street. Someone is having a massive house built very near to me and I believe they are at the sheet rock/painting stage because a literal horde of men in their giant pick up trucks have been parking on said “quiet” side street every morning at 5:30am for the last week. Did I mention my bedroom window overlooks this “quiet” side street? So, I’ve been awoken every morning between 5:30am and 6am (even Saturday!!!!) for the last week by men yelling good morning to each other, car doors slamming, and engines idling. I have slammed my window angrily many times, but they do not seem to notice/care.

Whether I am complaining back to you or commiserating, I am not certain (probably both).

  8. ahh..a girl after my own heart.
I hate when I wake up even just 5 minutes before my alarm.
With my work and school schedule I usually wake up around 9:30-10:00am.
Last week I was awakened by guys and big trucks moving a barrier back into place after someone had crashed into it. At 8 in the morning. I was super irritated.
Someone keeps calling my house at 9 but they dont leave a message. Again super irritating. I should just put the phone by my bed so when they call I can yell at them. then go back to sleep for 30 more minutes

  9. I think that there should be a rule about when you start maintenance work like that. That is way too early.
