Aside from my husband and food… and writing… and books… TV is definitely my other love.
I am SO EXCITED that Season Three of Mad Men is underway. Husband and I have been working our way through Season Two via Netflix (he sleeps through approximately every 2.5 episodes), so I haven’t seen any of the new season yet.
But I LOVE THIS SHOW.
It may be right up there with The Wire and Six Feet Under as one of my All Time Favorite Dramas. The characters are so vivid and complicated… and the plot lines are exciting without being over the top (at least, not so far! But I did love Alias right up until the penultimate season, so I may have a particularly high tolerance for “over the top” plot lines.)… and Betty’s dresses are so adorably feminine.
The thing I have to ask though is… what’s all the hype about Jon Hamm (aka Don Draper) being so hot?
Sorry, I just don’t see it.
Maybe it is just his character that I’m not loving. Creative and brooding – both appealing qualities. But philandering? Grouchy? Evasive? No thanks.
However, it is possible that I have odd taste.
If we’re talking TV man crushes – and if we’re talking strictly “older” men – I much prefer Jon Stewart, Eliot Stabler, Dr. Gregory House, and Omar Little. (He may be a vicious murderer, but he has morals! Sort of.)
Anybody else have unconventional TV crushes?
What’s this Mad Men I keep hearing about? I never watch dramas.. too in love with my comedies (30Rock, the Office, It’s Always Sunny)
I love my comedies too – The Office has to be one of the best shows on TV these days. Have you seen the British version? Hilarious in its own way, though the polar opposite of the NBC version.
Dramas definitely take a different sort of attention… but Mad Men is worth it. And you might be able to find things to laugh at – Betty Draper’s parenting skills, for one thing.
when i was about 10-12 i used to love to stay up late and watch late night tv, and i always had crushes on suave older ( then 12-lol ) men in tuxs and dinner jackets..like dean martin and johnny carson and even rowan and martin! i never thought about pop stars or teen heart throbs! nothing gave me a bigger thrill then staying up all night watching old black and white movies with fred astaire ! we need more debonaire type charmers on tv ! men who know how to balance a martini in one hand while squeezing the hostess, and tinkling the ivories! i love a cad , and man about town.. its a lost art! even hawkeye on mash (who i graduated to crushing on later) was a good example of the charming sophisticate with a wandering eye and a silver tongue but a heart of gold! keep your cantankerous miserable brooders and crusty love to hate them types! give me a ladies man ANYDAY! i havent seen mad men yet but i will have to check it out…i met a kid over the weekend at the philly folk festival who has a part on the show this sunday , hes about 12 , and his dad says he gives a whole big speech! maybe i will use that as an excuse to finally turn it on!
Mad Men definitely has its own resident ladies man – Roger Silver. I believe he was on Sex and the City as the guy who wanted Carrie to pee on him. But in Mad Men he is charming and, while misogynistic in his own way, loves women through and through.
